Let me tell you about the foggiest, most unexpectedly romantic morning I’ve ever photographed. Matt and Julia booked their engagement session as part of their wedding package (which I’m SO hyped to shoot this August). We planned a sunrise engagement session in Boulder, Colorado you know, golden light, mountain views, the whole dreamy Pinterest board come to life. Except… that’s not what happened. That morning, I left Colorado Springs in the pitch dark, only to find myself driving through the thickest fog you can imagine. Like, horror-movie-level fog. Zero visibility. No sunrise. Mountains. No nothing. I kept thinking, “Surely it’ll clear up by the time I get to Boulder.” Spoiler alert: it didn’t.
We arrived at our original location and couldn’t see past the parking lot. So we pivoted. I suggested we drive 15 minutes up the road to another park, just to see if the elevation shift might give us something. And somehow, miracle-level, it did! It was still foggy, still misty, still very much a “we woke up at 5am for this??” situation. But it was also stunning. The kind of soft, cinematic fog that wraps around you and turns the whole landscape into a painting. And Matt and Julia? They leaned all the way in!
These two aren’t big on PDA. They’re not performative or over-the-top. So instead of pushing them into poses that didn’t feel right, I just let them be. They wandered. Laughed. Held hands and cracked jokes and had quiet little moments that felt intimate and true. No big gestures. No mountain backdrop. Just love, showing up the way it always does when you let it breathe. And then as if the universe was like, “okayyy, fine, you earned it” the fog started to lift. Slowly. Gently. Just enough for the peaks to peek through and for us to get that soft post-storm glow. Like the mountains had been watching us the whole time, waiting for the perfect cue.
Midway through, Julia changed from jeans into the sweetest white dress and paired it with cowboy boots and suddenly we were in our country-lovin’, champagne-poppin’, engagement-photo era. It was playful and a little wild and exactly what the morning needed. They popped a bottle, sprayed the sky, and laughed like two people who knew this day would be one they’d never forget. This wasn’t the session we planned. But it was 100% the session that was meant to be. A little chaotic, a lot perfect, and totally them!
Let this be your sign that even when the weather does whatever it wants you can still get magic. Boulder has so many tucked-away trails and open spaces, and fog like this doesn’t ruin the vibe… it makes it. You don’t need sweeping views or perfect skies. You just need a photographer who can pivot and a love that can carry the day. I’ll bring the backup location and the energy, you just bring yourselves.
