First of all, congrats on planning your elopement! So, you have been thinking about eloping in Colorado? Let me tell you it’s an amazing, if not perfect location for your elopement, but there are some things you need to know if you are planning to elope in Colorado. I had the pleasure of capturing an amazing elopement in Colorado for Don + Mariah an amazing couple from North Carolina and let me tell you how they decided on their location! They decided to take the unique approach of pulling locations out of a hat. The last one standing was Breckenridge, CO, and they’ve never looked back! Isn’t that just the coolest story? Planning an elopement in a place you’ve never been like Colorado can feel daunting. But worry! I’ve put together this mini guide to help your planning process go a lot smoother!

Elope in Colorado
#1 Pay Attention to the Weather!
First things first, let’s talk weather! Colorado is known for its longer winters, which can often stretch into early June. If you’re picturing your elopement with a backdrop of lush green grass and blooming wildflowers, then July or August are your go-to months. But if you prefer golden fall foliage, then plan your elopement for September or October. And if you are dreaming of an elopement in a snowy winter wonderland, late December to early March is your ideal time frame. Remember, do your research on the weather around your chosen date!

#2 Be Aware of the Elevation
Elevation sickness is REAL! especially for those who’ve never been to Colorado. High country elevations can range from 9,000ft to 12,000+ ft. But don’t worry, with the right preparations, it’s entirely preventable. Water is going to be your best friend in Colorado. Keep hydrating, even when you think you’ve had enough. This will help your body adjust to the elevation. Also, plan to take it easy and avoid any strenuous activities for at least the first two days of your visit. The more time you give yourself to acclimate, the better. And don’t forget to pick up a can of oxygen from a local store (it might sound strange, but trust me, it can be a lifesaver if you start to get a headache)!

#3 Your Marriage License & Leave No Trace
Great news – getting your marriage license in Colorado is a breeze! There’s no waiting period, which means you can get your license the same day you arrive! And the process is straightforward; you don’t need an officiant or any witnesses. Simply sign the license with your partner and turn it in. So easy right?! Another thing to keep in mind is preserving the natural beauty of Colorado is a responsibility we all share. By following the Leave No Trace principles, we can ensure that this stunning landscape remains untouched for future generations to enjoy. Remember, it’s our duty to keep Colorado as beautiful as we found it!

#4 My Favorite Locations to Elope in Colorado
Now, let’s get to the exciting part – selecting your elopement location! Colorado is filled with stunning spots. Here are some of my favorite locations:
- Loveland Pass near Breckenridge, CO: A high mountain pass that offers breathtaking views for your elopement.
- Garden of the Gods – Colorado Springs, CO: A natural landmark that’s characterized by towering sandstone rock formations.
- Rocky Mountain National Park – Estes Park, CO: Known for its stunning mountains, diverse wildlife, and miles of hiking trails.
- Bridal Veil Falls – Telluride, CO: The tallest free-falling waterfall in Colorado, providing a dramatic backdrop.
- Maroon Bells – Aspen, CO: Two peaks in the Elk Mountains that are the most photographed mountains in North America due to their grandeur.
