Getting a Permit for Your Maroon Bells Elopement
The first and most important step when planning a Maroon Bells elopement is securing the required Special Use Permit for the Maroon Bells Amphitheater. This is the designated ceremony location near Maroon Lake. And it’s one of the only places where weddings are allowed in this area. The permit costs $200 and must be reserved through Recreation.gov. These permits are extremely limited and very competitive, so timing matters a lot when booking. Reservations open on a rolling window exactly one year in advance, which means if you want to get married on a specific date, you’ll need to book it the moment it becomes available. Waiting even a few days can mean the date gets taken. Another important rule to know is that weddings at the Maroon Bells Amphitheater are only allowed on weekdays. Weekend ceremonies are not permitted here, which is something to consider when coordinating travel for guests!
Timed Reservations and Transportation
Because the Maroon Bells area receives such a high number of visitors each year, the Forest Service limits vehicle traffic to protect the landscape. This means planning transportation is a key part of organizing your Maroon Bells elopement. From May through October, visitors are required to have a timed entry reservation to access the Maroon Bells Scenic Area. These reservations are necessary for your guests and vendors, even though the couple themselves are already permitted through the ceremony reservation.
There are also vehicle restrictions to keep in mind. Personal vehicles are not allowed past the Maroon Bells Welcome Station between 8 AM and 5 PM. As vehicle traffic on Maroon Creek Road is limited during the busiest hours of the day. When you reserve the amphitheater, you will receive five vehicle passes that allow travel past the welcome station during restricted hours. These passes can be picked up at the welcome station up to five days before your event. And it will be your responsibility to distribute them and coordinate transportation with your guests. If you have additional guests beyond those five vehicles, many couples arrange for people to arrive via shuttle transportation. Spring can still bring snow to the high elevations, and winter ceremonies at the amphitheater are typically not permitted due to access limitations. For most couples, planning between late June and early October provides the best combination of accessibility and scenery!
